Paris 2024: I called my pal Amy Lillard who at the time lived in the Gard, that part of France on the border of the Languedoc, Rhône and Provence. “I’m going to visit some folk your way. Want to come?” In a few days she was picking me up at the Avignon TGV and we headed off.
For a long time that area was a natural wasteland. Other than Pfifferling there were few wines to drink. But now amongst the vanGARD are Valentin Valles (phenomenal wines), Sébastien Chatillon, David Teyssier, Nicolas Renaud, soon to be, Agathe Puele and Soulier. And while there’s plenty to say about the former, I’m here to tell you about the latter. And just before sunset, we raced the sun to see the Soulier vines in Saint-Hilaire-d'Ozilhan.
