Up until now, as far as impressive wines from the UK, it's been all Sophie Evans for me. Her wines are gentle and delicious. And now, I can add two more very intriguing British wines and in addition, there is an identity emerging instead of something imitative. And I can definitely see myself sitting down and spending time with these two. Expensive though. What can you do? Land is a pricey thing in England.
Domaine Hugo 2021 Brut Nature Grape Chardonnay Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier & Pinot Gris Sulfur None A no-dosage memorable sparkler from England. Co-fermented, raised in anfora and neautral Burgundy barrels. Aged for 2 years on lees and an extra under cork. For second ferment they used Quartz (the Fleury yeast from biodynamic vineyards) and organic sugar. About $90. Bubbles of Britain
Offbeat Wines Many Moons 2020 Grape Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay (31%) Sulfur None Pop this pup into a wine geek blind line up of... well, anything, Pinot Blanc from Alsace or Burgundy perhaps? The acidity was so gripping and thrilling. It's a field blend of Pinot blanc (69%) and Chardonnay (31%) from Nicole and Daniel Ham's project in Crouch Valley, Essex. Whole bunch pressed in vertical wooden press then into a large foudre. Two years of levage. This is a still wine --and electric. It has Vermont acidity and English snap. Will be around $60, from Bubbles of Britain
